The Mornington
Peninsula swings round in a 100 kilometer boot-shaped pincer which almost
encloses Port Phillip Bay, and the sweep of land from the outskirts
of Melbourne to the tip is thought of as virtually one long beach.Port
Phillip Bay is also home to colonies of seals and pods of Bottlenosed
dolphins. Mornington, Dromana, Rosebud, Rye, Sorrento and other resorts
have traditionally attracted city people for decades and many return
to the same resort and even the same caravan park or camping ground
year after year. On a sunny summer day tens of thousands of people head
for the beaches. The peninsula's coastal scenery varies enormously.
Down the western shores are the Port Phillip Bay beaches, along the
foot are the dunes and steep cliffs of the Cape Schanck National Park,
while in Western Port Bay is a relatively unspoiled foreshore and quiet
villages where the peace contrasts with the bubbling holiday atmosphere
across the other side of the Peninsula.
The southern end of the Mornington Peninsula is the cradle of Eurpean
settlement in Victoria, but throughout the region remnants of its rich
history still exist, from pioneering homesteads to grand mansions.
The Mornington Peninsula is one of Australia's newest and most exciting
wine regions
Whenever you travel on the Penisula you cannot fail to notice the vines
of more than 150 vineyards are an integral part of its rich scenic appeal.
The Mornington Penisula claims Victoria's highest concentration of attractions
and leasure activities, which provide days of entertainment, even when
the sun does not shine.
Victoria's greatest concentration of quality golf courses can also be
found in the region. The sand base of most of them means they are playable
all year round. Four of them are rated in Australia's top 100.
