Mornington
Peninsula the Hinterland

THE
HINTERLAND
of the Mornington Peninsula is crowned by a range of well wooded
hills that constantly beckon to travellers to leave the highways.
Sitting 300 metres above Port Phillip Bay just a stone's throw away
from the city, Arthur's Seat commands spectacular views in every
direction. To the west, Port Phillip Bay, Melbourne's nautical playground
dominates the scene as far as the eye can see and to the east, the
misty mountains of the great dividing range seem to float upon the
horizon with Western Port Bay and French Island in the foreground.
Arthur's Seat has many picnic areas on top of the mountain in grassy,
sunny or shady locations, with eight free electric barbecues and
a large roofed rotunda.
With just a short walk you'll reach the Seawinds Botanical garden,
which has BBQ picnic areas, lovely lawns and gardens, many spectacular
deciduous trees and also specimens of William Rickett's sculptures.
Views from Seawinds are magnificent.
There are short walks to scenic lookouts and also the wonderful
Two Bays walk from Latrobe Parade to Waterfall Gully and even on
to Bushrangers Bay. There is the Flinders Lookout, Seawinds circuit
walk and the Kings Falls circuit walk. Ask at the Chairlift for
details of these walks.
Arthur's Seat is renowned for its many and varied galleries and
craft workshops. Visit Arthur's Cottage, Pine Ridge Gallery and
McCrae Gallery and the historic McCrae Homestead. Also you can visit
the Red Hill Community Market which is famous for local produce
and craft.
For the more adventurous, you can take a horseback trail ride along
natural bush trails, with spectacular scenery, and then on down
to ride along the sands of the ocean beaches.
Red Hills picture book landscapes have always attracted countless
writers, artists, crafts people and musicians. The output of their
inspiration can often be found and purchased in local galleries
and at the Peninsula;s exceptional outdoor markets - bustling arrays
of colour and activity.
The Mornington Peninsula is Melbourne's own vineyard and their vignerons
are noted for their hospitality which makes "cellar dooring"
one of the Peninsula's greatest attractions. The wines enjoy national
and international acclaim and scenic drives take you through a tapestry
of vineyards, with magnificent roadside landscapes and coastal scenery.
