Peninsula Westernport to Cape Schanck

Westernport Bay, so close
to and so unlike Port Phillip Bay, is relatively unfamiliar to most
Victorians and yet has gained world-wide significance for its wetlands
with their strange plants and ecological diversity.
Hastings, the main town on Western Port has a population of 6500
and some significant industries attracted by its natural deep water
harbour. The activities of large shipping, a fishing fleet, an active
yacht club and an impressive marina accommodating 500 power boats
and yachts give the town a busy seafaring atmosphere.
Nearby at Crib Point, nautical activities continue at Australia's
largest Royal Australian Naval Base, HMAS Cerberus, where sailors
are trained in elementary seamanship.
Inland from Hastings are some of the State's largest antique and
old wares shops. Converted packing houses and cool stores house
enough furniture, china and memorabilia to keep the whole family
amused for some hours.
Tea rooms and cafes serving fresh local products are near at hand
to restore flagging energy.
The sheltered waters of Western Port, teem with fish, and are a
haven for all kinds of wading and sea birds. An extensive lagoon
at Coolart attracts thousands of migrating Sacred Ibis to nest on
the lagoon and feed among the protected wetlands where there are
camouflaged platforms and hides for visitors.
Coolart homestead, a 19th century mansion surrounded by gracious
gardens now administered by the Conservation Trust, has a fascinating
photographic collection.
Just a short drive from the calm safe beaches of Somers, Balnarring
and Merricks is the surfing mecca, Point Leo. Surfboard riders clad
in their wetsuits can be seen at any hour of the day as the swells
roll in from Bass Strait.
From Shoreham's beautiful tree-lined beach to Flinders and the coastal
views over farmlands and Westernport Bay to Phillip Island.
Cape Schanck, the southern-most tip of the Mornington Peninsula,
is a must for lovers of rugged coastalon-Flinders road affords some
of the beautiful scenery and cliffside walks. For an exhilarating
experience and memorable scenery, follow the track to the extensive
boardwalk leading out to Pulpit Rock. Take time to walk to Bushrangers
Bay, it's suitable for all ages and is regarded by many to be the
best short coastal walk in the state.
